What is a doula?
Doula means "woman's servant." The American Pregnancy Association states, "A doula is a professional trained in childbirth who provides emotional, physical and informational support to the woman who is expecting, in labor or has recently given birth. The doula's role is to help women have a safe, memorable and empowering birthing experience."

Will my doula take the place of my partner?
No! My role as doula is never to take the place of a husband or partner, but to compliment the experience. If your partner needs a snack or nap break, they can go take that time while I stay by your side. If encouragement or support is needed, I'll be there for your partner as well. I can help guide your partner as he or she provides you with relaxation & pain management strategies.

What kind of births do you attend and where?
As your birth doula, I will attend your birth at any hospital, birth center or home within 1.5 hours of my own home. I will also attend any kind of birth, I am here to support you, no matter what decisions you have made for your birth. I support the idea of informed choice and if you're comfortable with the birth plan you've chosen, that's all I need. Every woman, family, child & birth is different and I can respect that.

- Emotional support: By the end of a doula-client relationship, many clients refer to their doula as a sister or friend due in part to the support received. Doula's advocate for and reassure the mother and come equipped with an extra shoulder to cry on, a mega-phone and pom poms to cheer someone on and a sounding board for ideas, frustrations, questions and concerns.
- Physical support: Labor is hard, but can be managed. A doula can be a wealth of knowledge when it comes to relaxation techniques, pain management and other physical issues that accompany pregnancy, labor & birth. She might be able to provide massages, help with positioning, back rubbing and typically remains in close proximity to the mother. If the mother needs a rest, the doula is there to hold her up.
- Informational support: Many clients come into the doula-client relationship needing information on any number of issues relating to the pregnancy, labor,, birth & postpartum time periods. A doula has the resources to help guide the mother (& parrtner) through her concerns & questions.
